“If you find something you love it’s so exciting. Your brain is a bowl of energy. It gives you such passion for life. That is the power of creativity.” ~ Thelma Pepper

Thelma Pepper was born in 1920 in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia. In 2020, from her adoptive home in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, she reflects on a century of life, love, passion and creativity as seen through the lens of her camera, and that of her father and grandfather before her.
In middle age, in the depths of depression, Thelma discovered her true artistic nature, embarking on a creative journey with enough energy and passion for another lifetime. In her poignant black and white photographs we glimpse more than a century of hope and hardship, we see how creativity can inspire human connection and transform lives.
Thelma so believed everyone had a creative spirit ~ whether for baking bread or making willow baskets or crafting with needle and thread. Whether photography or painting or the written word. She believed creativity had the power to lift our spirits in the face of life's adversities and give us voice when words fail.
In 2020, $1 from each book purchased was donated to Read Saskatoon, the literacy change maker in our community. Reading was another huge theme in Thelma's life. She loved to read aloud ~ it was while she was reading to seniors in a care home that she first picked up her camera and started taking portraits. Reading changed her life, literally.
Now in 2021, as Thelma's photographs are on display at Remai Modern Art Gallery, $1 from each book purchased will be donated in support artistic endeavours in our community. So everyone ~ like Thelma ~ can discover their inner creative spirit ♥
